Edra Toth’s original ballet Dracula performed by Northeastern Ballet Theatre (NBT), is one of the annual highlights of the Halloween season. If you have been fortunate enough to see this production, you will know that it contains all that is best about ballet - passion, emotion, and beautiful dancing coupled with the fantastic choreography and costumes of NBT. Witnessing this show takes you on a journey to another place and time. You come away with a deeper understanding of the psyche that is Count Dracula - a character who is near and dear to Miss Toth’s heart because of her hereditary connection to Transylvania. Miss Toth escaped from Hungary as a four year old and went on to become the first Prima Ballerina for Boston Ballet Company.
The ballet’s main prop is a 44 foot long bridge. The bridge, built in 2006 out of wood and stored in 2007, sat in a storage facility that was not ideal for 7 years, rendering the condition to be degraded when pulled out of storage in 2014 when Dracula was again performed. The bridge needs to be completely rebuilt, and the intention is to construct the new bridge out of aluminum that can be easily stored and transported and will not degrade in storage. The façade of the bridge and the magnificent wall that is the backdrop, were not made with fire-resistant materials so we are unable to use them in theaters anymore due to strict fire codes. This reconstruction of the set will allow NBT to perform Dracula to audiences anywhere easily, and this ballet needs to be shown to as many people as possible. It’s that powerful.
In order to continue to present this production, NBT is looking to you, our audience for help. We need to raise $5,000 for the rebuilding of the bridge and we also need another $5,000 to purchase the fire resistant materials to use for the façades of the bridge and the wall. In total, we need to raise $10,000.
At this time, we ask you to reach into your hearts and give whatever you can to aid NBT with this project. We have a date set for Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the Kingswood Arts Center in Wolfeboro, NH for the next performance of Dracula. Ideally we need to raise the funds over the next month or so in order to be able to get the materials and reconstruct the bridge and wall in time for this performance. Think how wonderful it would be to watch the next production of this fantastic ballet and know that you have been integral part of making it happen! We can’t do this without you!
To commemorate this, NBT will be publishing a book about Dracula: it will be a haunting, true account of the creation of Dracula and the spirit that follows the ballet.
